Description
evening of Fine Spanish Flamenco dancing performance .Please note that the hall is not very large so attend early.
The band Jerez-Texas was formed in 2002 as a combination of the talents
of a Flamenco guitarrist (Ricardo Esteve), a classical cellist (Matthieu Saglio)

The closely-knit partnership among the three performers and the poetry
oozing from their compositions, a mix of Flamenco’s raw, deep strength
coupled with Jazz’s creative freedom, turn their every performance into
a most original invitiation to experience a musical blend like no other,
equally captivating for fans of either style.

Time :
Wednesday, May 30, 2007
7:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Synopsis
This week, Cinemagic will be screening director Erin Riklis’ “The Syrian
Bride”, set in the windy hills along the Israeli and Syrian border.
Leaving her village in the Golan Heights, Mona will cross the border
to marry the arranged Syrian fiancée she has never met, as is
dictated by Druze custom. Even with the pending celebrations, this
may be the saddest day in Mona’s life, as once she crosses through to
the other side she may never see her family again.
In this Middle Eastern family drama, the hard politics of the region
fall away to reveal a personal and intimate account of the rituals of
marriage, family and community. Told with humor, compassion and rare
insight into the plight of women living in this region, “The Syrian
Bride” is about physical and emotional borders and the will to cross
them.
I think I’ve seen that movie.

Any good?
Jewaira
Quite good if i remember correctly. Don’t think I watched the whole movie, it was more towards the middle when I started watching it.
I see on the 15th you had a puppet show outside the science centre, I would love to have watched that and seen how different the ethics and morality of it would be to a classic English one like Punch and Judy, did you go watch it J? what was it about? what was the moral of it? who were the main characters? you didn’t watch it did you?…….
==================================
No I did not go ….and I am wondering about the timings..seems quite late at night for a puppet show. BTW I list stuff here on events that I see here and there and think I may want to go and see….but don’t always get around to going

Heritage Blending: Cultural Roots of Kuwaiti Traditional Music
Traditional Kuwaiti music is closely tied to its original environmental setting, whether it be that of the desert, sea, or city. Thus, Kuwaiti desert music manifest Najdi roots of central Arabia, sea songs merge a mixture of traditions from Arabian, Indian, and African lands, and urban music maintains the high-art character of active city centers. This presentations discusses the three traditional music categories of Kuwait–desert, sea, and urban–with a look back at cultural roots and the evolution of a truly “Kuwaiti” style. It will also include audio samples of these various styles. So come and enjoy the flavorful sounds of Kuwaits rich musical heritage.

Info below from DAI brochure
Ambassador Ross Burns retired in 2003 from the Australian Foreign Service where he was posted in several Middle Eastern countries and served as Ambassador to Syria. An historian with a strong interest in archaeology, his passion was further stimulated by service in the region. At present, he is continuing his studies at Macquarie University in Sydney.
Having identified the need for a comprehensive study of Syria’s monuments, Amb. Burns wrote Monuments of Syria (I B Tauris, London, 1992 with subsequent paperback and French editions) and followed this up with the first study of Damascus’s history in English (Damascus – A History, Routledge, London 2005).
‘How Europe ‘Rediscovered’ Damascus’
This lecture looks at the details of Syria’s past and of Damascus’ role in it. We will discuss how it took many centuries for the pre-conceptions to fade away and how the picture that has finally emerged is still only partly appreciated.
Damascus is a city with strong associations with most phases of human history. It has twice served as the capital of extensive empires which spread the culture throughout the region and in the world. Yet for many centuries, knowledge of Damascus and its historic role was only imperfectly understood outside the Arab and Islamic world.
Damascus long remained a semi-mythical city which few Europeans felt able to visit. Its status as the centre of Islamic resistance to the Crusades increased the sense of apparent isolation and mystery in European eyes. In 1148, the catastrophic failure of the Second Crusade (led by three European kings) at the gates of Damascus only amplified further the city’s formidable and unassailable reputation. As the first European travellers, inspired by the European Enlightenment, began to put together a picture of the city and its associations with the classical world, they brought their own pre-conceptions which coloured their perceptions of the city’s historic role and great architectural achievements.

Islamic Art and Patronage: Treasures from Kuwait Exhibition
From 31 October 2008 until 28 February 2009, one of the most famous exhibitions in the world is being revived for the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization.
Organised for Sharjah under the auspices of H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Islamic Art and Patronage: Treasures from Kuwait is the exhibition that was sent to Russia for exhibition in the Hermitage days before Iraq invaded the country.
Because the destruction of the National Museum of Kuwait left the collection homeless, it toured for 14 years and became known internationally as “Art in Exile.”

Opening Reception Wednesday, 14 January 2009 at 7:00 pm
The works of Dr. Rashed Diab the Sudanese artist in mid-career has exhibited solo and in groups in many locations in the Middle East (Kuwait, Syria, Qatar, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Sudan), Europe (Spain, Britain, Greece) and the United States (Boston, Washington).
His work resides in many collections abroad in Paris, Amman, Spain and Cuba for instance. His intense blue abstract expressionist work convey painterly overlapping passages of colour which conceal other shapes and forms. These shapes obviously have a special meaning for the artist.

ZAY
A showcase of various interpretations of the traditional dress, to invigorate and revive its wear.
Nafnouf and Zeboun
In my book Traditions, I had researched and passionately documented aspects of the traditional arts and textiles of Kuwait. I recognized and focused on some beautiful and significant examples of the traditional dress. Today I carry this interest and fascination a step further, into the realm of actual design. I take the zeboun, the robe worn by women and men in the past and the nafnouf dress, and try to revitalize their wear. To give both a modern line with a traditional essence.
I appreciate cooperation of Kaveri Agarwal, a young designer from India who I met through the Textile Art Association meetings. Kaveri has worked for some time in manufacturing and reviving the traditional Indian dress and textiles in her country, India, and thus understood my enthusiasm and vision and could execute it well.
ZAY is also an interesting attempt at cultural exchange. In the past the Kuwaiti merchants sailed to India in search of fine silks and gold thread for their dress and embroidery. It may be that again we follow that ancient cultural route.
I hope this artistic and cultural endeavor will give you the joy and pleasure it did for me.
Celebrating traditions…

Patricia Millns
on Wednesday, 4 – 20 February 2009
Please note that due the First Ring Road Construction the only access to Dar Al Funoon is through the Gulf Road.
Patricia Millns creates installations from paper, scented plant and vegetal material, metal and colour which call up the various sensations of ‘Emra’a…woman’, objects that symbolize qualities of spirituality, beauty and intensity, all the hidden qualities that reflect emra’a to the artist. Millns articulates her poetic ideas in two ways: the Thob Sequence and the Adornment Sequence. The Thob Sequence concerns dress as cultural icons and fragrances that carry references to memory and the past. The Adornment Sequence focuses on the messages that jewelry transmits. Millns’ series communicate overall qualities of delicacy and poetry.

Confashions posted about Sirdab 6
“Al-Sabah is a talented Kuwaiti designer that managed to turn her vision into a reality when she began her journey into design in 2002. She has triggered a new interest in our design heritage and built a solid reputation for herself, as one of Kuwait’s best Caftan designers around. She mastered the ability to combine vintage and modern fabrics from all over the world to create designs that are unique as the designer herself.
There is also another side of Al-Sabah that many people are unaware of. She’s an artist and displays her paintings and artwork at her house’s basement. She also collects vintage caftans that goes back more than 100 years. This has been the influence behind her gallery Sirdab 6. Sirdab is the Arabic for basement and 6 is her house number. Souad’s paintings, designs, and vintage caftan collection are all exhibited in her basement Sirdab 6.”

Children’s Art Workshops
October Programme (ages 8 – 12)
This season, with the continued support of McDonald’s, we will concentrate on six new subjects (music, poetry, modern art, glass, metal, and textiles) and continue learning about three favourites from last season (ceramics, calligraphy, and manuscripts). The extra session each month gives the participants the opportunity to more fully explore each topic. Like last season, all classes will be held at the Al Americani Cultural Centre (AACC) unless otherwise noted.
The classes have been extended to two hours (0930 – 1130) and there will be sessions twice per month. The fees remain the same as last year: KD2 per child per session for Friends of the DAI and KD3 per child per session for everyone else. NOTE: There is a one-time additional charge of KD3 for the 10 October session to help offset the Colour Me Mine costs.

Young Collectors Workshops
Young Collectors Workshops
October Programme (ages 6 – 8 )
This programme is based largely on a programme created by the Smithsonian’s Dr. Sharon Shaffer based on the fact that “children are natural collectors. The process of collecting, especially for young children, is a step in giving meaning to the world. The child recognizes distinct details associated with each object and becomes adept at identifying similarities and differences. Enthusiasm and knowledge grow with the collection.”
Our objective is to use that natural tendency to introduce the participants to select aspects of Islamic art and culture. The programme will be held once a month, for one hour (0930 – 1030), at the al Americani Cultural Centre. The fees are KD2 per child per session for Friends of the DAI and KD3 per child per session for everyone else.

DAI Announces New DAI Forum
The Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah (DAI) announced the creation of the DAI Forum, an umbrella organization that will integrate and expand some existing programmes and introduce new cultural opportunities. The programmes, which will be held on Wednesdays at the al-Maidan Cultural Centre in Maidan Hawalli, includes music, lectures, documentaries, a book club, travel opportunities, and more.
“DAI activities on Monday nights feature experts and scholars on some aspect of art and culture from around the world,” said Sheikha Hussah Sabah Salem al-Sabah, DAI director general. “The DAI Forum will provide opportunities for Kuwait-based specialists to share their unique gift or talent with Friends of the DAI. For example, Farah Behbehani, a rare female calligrapher and creator of the new Conversations with Birds book, will talk about how she went from art student to published author/illustrator and Kennedy Center installation artist. Naif al-Mutawa will discuss how he’s made “The 99” a successful comic book and, more important, an ambassador for Islam around the world. Faisal Khadjeh will be presenting traditional Kuwait and Arabic music live in our theatre. And that’s just three of the almost three dozen events and activities that the DAI Forum will present.”
The DAI Forum gives the DAI Music Circle (DMC) double the number of performance opportunities. Having completed two seasons, the DMC is successfully providing gifted musicians in Kuwait the opportunity to perform for enthusiastic audiences. This season, Cultural Season 15, the first and third Wednesdays of each month have been allocated to DMC performances.
The second Wednesday of each month is reserved for the DAI Forum Book Club. Lively conversation is expected as books related to the region, including The Adventures of Ibn Battutah by Ross E. Dunn and Tales from One Thousand and One Arabian Nights, N.J. Dawood translator, are read and discussed by Friends of the DAI members.
Finally, the 4th Wednesday of each month will feature a lecture or documentary programme of interest to the community. In addition to the two speakers listed above, the DAI Forum will offer a calligraphy workshop for non-artists as well as artists and the chance to learn more about Islamic arts and culture, the environment, interior architecture in the region and much more.
