How important is identity? And is it better to remain anonymous or be known by one’s real persona?

Belle du Jour’s secret identity was revealed today in The Sunday Times. She is  research scientist Dr. Brooke Magnanti who worked as a prostitute to pay her way through graduate school as she could not find a job to support her as she prepared her PhD thesis.

Now that is an interesting turn of events! Like she said anonymity plays its role in different times and in hers it was then, but she doesn’t see a need for it now.. She did what she had to do to better herself, and the case goes for a lot of people.

I bet she feels better.
She says :

“It was time. I’ve felt so much guardedness and paranoia about remaining anonymous recently. It’s really been playing with my emotions. Now I just really want to be on the other side of this. I don’t mind what happens about coming out; I don’t want this massive secret over me any more. It’s changing the way I behave around people, the way I conduct my life……..[..] But the secret has become heavier to bear because I’ve changed a lot in the interim. At the time, keeping secrets and not being open with people was working for me. I’ve got to a point in my life where that’s no longer true.”

OHHH that is a tough one. I think if it were me I’d rather remain anonymous if I’d have ever done what she did. The world is not such a forgiving place for women. That would be a terrible thing for her children to find out someday, IMHO.

She seems to be a pretty strong character and able to deal with it. It is not easy keeping one’s anonymity and she probably feels better about it.
On the other hand, there is also the concept that if you have been granted privacy, why go and tell all ?
I read somewhere that a former boyfriend was going to the press about it so it was probably better she did it herself.

I am lucky the government paid for my PhD hehehehe.
although I don’t think I would be male pros. material :P

but yeah the reason why she should be annynoums probably doesn’t exist anymore. Besides she made a fortune from being annonymous because people wanna explore the unknown. Now she will make another fortune from her known name because people wanna know the personality and real story behind this escort girl.

Your comment reminded me of something I read a while ago:

Young male college students with suitable criteria (no smoking, no drugs, etc…) can make good money donating sperm to sperm banks.

That seems a relatively effortless endeavour.

If she feels good about it, I’m happy for her. But I would like some things to stay a mystery. Knowing takes all the fun out of life!

Welcome back, Jewaira.

jewaira - November 19, 2009

Thanks Gorky :)

Yes see what you mean; a certain mystique.

Are you by any chance into veils and scarves and stuff like that?

gorky - November 20, 2009

Women are a mystery even without veils. :-)

that’s what many men say…some with resignation, others with delight :P
