I’m pretty sure BigBird is a girl.
And oscar is neither, because he/she is too old to be either.
But I never thought of Elmo as a boy, just a small, overly whinny child.
I had to vote for Oscar, as he represents an archetypal character. Everyone knows someone like Oscar in real life. He’s a grumpy old soul who, despite presenting an outwardly bluff persona to the world, actually has a heart of gold…
Hehe, you’re probably right. Most people have no patience to uncover that heart of gold though.
I found it interesting that the Oscar character was indeed inspired by a grouchy waiter in New York and the voice by a cab driver.
And this:
“Through Oscar, children learn about respect and tolerance, and they discover that people with different views and lifestyles can still be great friends. Oscar’s soft spot for his pet worm, Slimey, proves that underneath it all, that curmudgeonly green grump is capable of love too.” http://www.sesamestreet.org/onair/characters/oscar

I actually never thought about their gender.

A Kuwaiti Sesame Street character! How original!
You’re a bit quick with generalization.
