I won’t post the photos here.

But please take a look at these photos at the links below and judge for yourself.

The occasion was the annual party for employees at the Royal Hayat Hospital in Jabriya.

The first article and the photos that caused a big outcry

Today’s follow up article, some photos and more readers’ comments

Is this responsible journalism in light of the volatile situation in the country these days?

How do you feel about the quality of those photos?

What was the reason for publishing such a news item at this time?

I encourage you to voice your opinion in the comment section of the newspaper site.

i completely lost respect for rai newspaper

on the brighter (sarcastic) side of things, some of the mp’s have smthg to keep them busy now

I agree about AlRai newspaper.

Shame on them.

They looked like a cheap tabloid gossip newspaper when they published that story.

I liked the dude doing the crow dance on someones shoulder … anyways never liked the Hayat hospital , because word on the street is they are racial towards dark skinned nurses from a certain country, they only hire fair skinned ‘asian’ nurses from the other certain country … once again its just the street talk , i hope it isnt true , but if thats true …. i hope some one grills them and fry’s them too.

============================

Grey
With regards to their employment policies and their preferences for Filipino over Indian nurses, I wouldn’t base my opinion on street talk :) I say take it from the horse’s mouth and find out directly from the hospital itself.

From the time I have been reading Al Rai Newspaper they have only been sparking controversy and in this case this is one of them. I think this is sensationalism on their part, and their mentality is simple if their isn’t any bad news then make some up.

These people were having an event and keeping to themselves. Even if it was an open event, it was kept together. If someone didn’t like it then they shouldn’t attend.

========================================

Shame on the newspaper for using such cheap tactics.

The Royal Hayat Hospital took out ads in most of the newspapers yesterday, apologizing for the party and promising to penalize those responsible.

I couldn’t believe it.

The Hospital administration should be filing a case against Al-Rai for publishing such photos with the intent of defaming the employees and the institution. The Hospital should be asking for compensation for damages. The Hospital should be standing up for its employees. Shame on you Royal Hayat Hospital for not supporting those most important to your organization.

In addition, Al Rai should investigate the reporters who covered this event and their intentions behind such a report.
It was shameful and unnecessary to publish photos of people at a private function simply enjoying themselves and portraying them as perpetrators of vice and corruption.

I’m just curious,, can a person sue a newspaper for publishing their photographs without permission?

I don’t know the legal advice Enigma but I sure hope that someone sues the AlRai paper instead of just apologizing for having fun.

At this rate we are going to be moving to saudi to have some freedom :S

===========================================

Such private parties are nothing new to Kuwait; what amazes me is why such photos were taken and published in a AlRai newspaper with the intent of embarrassing innocent people and the hospital owners.

There is nothing wrong with people having fun and this was within the confines of a private organization. It’s no one else’s business. It’s not like they were partying in the streets.

10. esetch - June 4, 2008

I did not see the photos, i do not care what happens behind closed doors in a private party.

as if our MPs were waiting for such thing.

=================================

It’s up to the people to pressure the MP’s into taking care of the issues that are important to them. I hope this was not one of the issues on top priority with Al Rai newspaper.

Shameful

Unfortunately I don’t speak/read Arabic to understand the purpose behind the pictures or what the article said. It seems like a pretty standard mixed party… Then again I’m thinking in terms of Egypt, whereas Kuwait has a higher percentage of Muslims- or so I believe. The only thing I noticed is that everyone was drinking water… I’d be more scandalized if they were all drinking bacardi and coke. What I would come away from the article with is that most of the workers there are expats and probably not Muslim, so whats the issue?

The most politically-charged picture I saw, that made me wonder about the agenda behind the reporting (before reading the comments on here,) is the one of the shemagh left sitting on the chair. Its like they’re trying to make it a symbol of their Islam left behind while they go party.

But thats just a crude reading of the pictures without being able to read the story behind it.

==========================

Here is a link to an English article on the subject First sign of MP friction in ‘Royal’ row on party

Although mixed parties and dancing may be commonplace in other countries such as Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, etc…even amongst Muslims this is not common in the Gulf states (there are always exceptions of course)

Many of the people at the party (judging from the photos) were expatriates simply enjoying themselves. The ghutras on the chair most probably belonged to some Kuwaiti men who removed it for better mobility whilst dancing.

The write up was quite intent on demeaning the employees and portraying them as perpetrators of vice and corruption which only served to enrage some conservative readers

12. Devil Finch - June 4, 2008

If you want to make sense out of this fuzz, you should understand Alrai’s agenda:

1- To protect & advance the business interests of Bodai family.

2- To advocate MPs Jassem Al-Kharafi and Marzoug Al-Ghanem, with whome they have “familial” kinship.

The first item was clearly stated by Rai’s owner, Jassem Bodai, during his infamous interview with American senators (see interview http://www.jbooda i.com/ ). The second item is clear to any one who follows Rai coverage of parliamentary elections and parliament speaker’s election.

That story was not a responsible journalism practice. It was not journalism per se. It was mere sensationalism. Take my word, time will reveal the motive and it will be inline with one/both of Rai’s Agenda.

=========================

….and boy do people love sensationalist news bits don’t they!

Too bad we can’t sue for defamation of character in Kuwait, this type of application doesn’t work in our court system. And I think the Hayat Hospital Management wants to appease its customers rather then fight for its employees.. just a sad state of affairs..

Thats why I don’t like most news papers in Kuwait

I wonder what’s going on with the employees involved now?

I think the Hospital management really chickened out and it was even more infuriating reading their apology. Eshda3wa

15. Manal - June 4, 2008

about the AlRai news paper
It is normal and expected to publish an article that catch people attention

the other side of the problem is that kuwaiti people live’s in a bubble, they don’t want to know that others have their culture
and we didn’t learn to respect other’s cultural behavior

Finally
I just need to say that this is not the only party to do such things
most people in kuwait knows that number of families do much more things

For these situations, we must teach our children that we live in a world full of different cultures and behaviors, to make sure they respect others

I wish to live in a peaceful world insha alah

=================

Hi Manal,
Yes it was not proper for the newspaper to publish private celebration photos like that and I don’t know if they had permission to or not.

And it was wrong of the hospital management not to defend their employees’ rights and their privacy

More developments today in the news:
Legal measures against hotels over party, Star Academy

KUWAIT: Following a storm of criticism by Islamist and tribal MPs of two hotels, the first for hosting a team for Lebanese TV show Star Academy, and the other for allowing a private dance party, the ministry of commerce and industry said yesterday it planned legal actions against them. Undersecretary of the ministry Rasheed Al-Tabtabai said that officials from the two hotels were summoned by the ministry and referred to the hotel classifications department “for taking necessary legal action”.

in this culture everyone has an opinion about everything, and their opinion is always right, like mine.

The issue returns to laws and the ability to charge these people with a crime, not just gossip and ruin reputations, which in this culture is more valuable than anything.

Kuwait relies to a great deal, on foreign labor who have their own cultural norms which include socializing between men and women. Many Kuwaitis have traveled or lived abroad, and may have noticed that when men and women mix it does not necessarily lead to crazy, drunken orgies, rape and other anti-social behaviour.

People who voluntarily attend a mixed party to celebrate an occasion should not be treated like criminals, in this case, considering their jobs revolve around providing a professional service and facility which many Kuwaitis use and trust to help in the birthing process.

its a shame that so much effort is being put into this issue rather than the bigger picture, not only the entirely government funded health care system, but the inability of parliament, among themselves to make forward progress on any issue.

anyway, good luck to everyone

Thank you q8smoke for expressing your opinion and like you we all want the best for Kuwait.

26. Laowai laowai - June 6, 2008

I wanna get myself a job in Kuwait at the Royal Hayat :)
Anyway, I think the folks at Al Rai were merely trying to sensitize Kuwait society to the shape of things to come : an evolving party scene in Kuwait being a case in point. I quite enjoyed the photos, actually. It is always heartening to see our doctors who work so very hard shake a leg or two( like the rest of us) and how ! The ladies in the picture all appear very sober and decent and besides simply dancing with a man after hours is not the same as having sex with him, or having his babies.

The Al Rai folk should be commended for trying to give a fillip to tabloid journalism in the Mideast. Like it or not, tabloid journalism too has a place in its own right , and denying that is tantamount to Fascist Liberalism.

Grow up Kuwait ! People just want to have fun without someone hollering at them for what they should or shouldn’t be doing. The world is watching what a foolish spectacle is being made over nothing.

28. ex employee - June 7, 2008

hi
i am an ex employee of royale hayat hospital, the hospital is currently being sued by many of us for failed contracts,
never in health care have i seen such a dangerous place,,,
one of the ladies an irishwoman was put in jail on her return from holidays as the hospital cancelled her visa without telling her,,,,,,, she was harassed by the hospital, there is a man who currently in kuwait who is an illegal resident because the hospital fired him, then cancelled his visa as well,, they had the worst practice of any hospital i have seen,,,,

many babies have been damaged in that place by poor practice,,, the vaccum delivery of the babies caused brain damage as it was used wrongly, shame on that place,,,

===============================

Those are alot of allegations.

It sound highly unlikely that the Irish woman would return from her holidays, enter the country and be thrown in jail just because her iqama was canceled. If her iqama was indeed canceled by the hospital, then you would think it would show up on the immigration database upon arrival and she would be refused entry not thrown in jail.

In any case, if there are indeed problems with employees and the way they are treated, then they should probably unite and voice their concerns publicly and suing the hospital is a good step in the right direction.

31. Peter Anderson - June 7, 2008

Hi
I just want to confirm that there are 6 of us who were terminated from the Royale Hayat Hospital for no disciplinary reasons but for purely financial reasons. The Indian co-owner wanted to make a quick profit and we were too expensive (all of us with many years of international experience) plus he outsourced virtually all areas of the hospital to companies he owned or had a financial stake in. He has removed virtually all European staff and replaced them with cheaper and less experienced labour.

The Royale Hayat Hospital was also involved with the detaining of the Irish lady (she WAS detained overnight and was treated as a criminal) purely because the hospital wanted to intimidate all of us to drop our law suit. The hospital wouldn’t let her free until she signed a document. This is a traversty of justice on their part and this is not an isolated case. I have found that Myself and another person will be detained if we enter the country because the Royale Hayat Hospital has blacklisted us saying that we absconded. We did not abscond because we were terminated and had to leave. We could not cancel our visas because they wanted us to sign a piece of paper absolving them of all charges against them. We refused. There have been threats made against some of the people, by the hospital.

All we want is that the Royale Hayat Hospital abides by the contracts they and us signed in good faith and pay us what we are entitled to. There can’t be one law for employers and another law for the employees (workers) because this is not what the Kuwaiti law makers were envisioning.

I just wanted to set the record straight and hopefully highlight problems a lot of employees are facing with unscrupulous companies.

===================================

Thank you Peter for your input and further explaining the employee situation.

It appears that this case has stirred a hornet’s nest and there is perhaps more to the scandal than is known by the public.

I certainly had no idea that there have been any problems with employees but I did hear last year about some defective breast implants that were being used in breast augmentation and this was only because someone who had had the operation was informed of the “problem”.

I am certain that those employees affected can seek adequate compensation through proper legal channels and I wish you all luck.

Human rights society defends employees of Royal Hayat

Published Date: June 08, 2008 Kuwait Times

KUWAIT: The Kuwait Society for Human Rights noted that the photographs published in various local newspapers about the Royal Hayat party was a violation to the human rights of the people in the photos.

The society said all the expatriates and Kuwaitis working at Royal Hayat Hospital had their rights violated when their private pictures at their party were published without their consent.

The society pointed out that according to internationals laws as well as article 30 of the Kuwaiti constitution, every individual is guaranteed to human freedom.
The society emphasized that what the employees of Royal Hayat hospital went through was a violation of local and international laws and a direct attack towards those people.

It further emphasized that it will spare no effort to defend the rights of every individual in Kuwait under the decree of personal freedom guaranteed by the state’s constitution.

33. Damned if you do, damned if you don't - June 9, 2008

Much is made of mixed gender parties by those we do not speak of to the extent you begin to wonder if they’d much rather have single gender parties alone happening in Kuwait all the time, and thereby, propagating the social phenomenon beginning with an ” H ” and leading to a state of lasting happiness, beginning with a ” G” :)

The negative press this has generated is certainly doing no favours to Kuwait’s image abroad. Hiring and retaining world class talent in Kuwait has always been a huge challenge, partly because of major quality of life issues for most people here, and this unfortunate episode will only further strengthen such convictions and re-inforce biases some more.

Which international careerist will want to move to Kuwait – lock stock and barrel if offered a ditto package in say, Hong Kong, Singapore or Dubai ?? The less said the better.

===========================

Lets hope the negative press as you say will boost positive responses and get people to see the light.

Irish Lady speaking out…

I have kept “silent” for too long. I am confirming that I was locked behind bars in a Kuwaiti Group Cell on 20th February 2008 in deplorable inhumane conditions without any warning, being the only Western person among about 100 of mixed races.

I was stopped at Kuwait Airport Immigration Police having returned from a short trip to Dubai, was interrogated for 7 (seven) hours by Airport Police with no proper communication relayed because nobody could speak English. No food, water or toilet facilities were offered to me and eventually I managed to get an emergency call to the British Embassy out of sheer desperation. It was through them I managed to find out why I was arrested. Royale Hayat Hospital had cancelled my residence work visa without informing me and consequently when I re-entered Kuwait I was classed as an “illegial immigrant”. It was there responsibility to inform me that my residency was cancelled but they failed to do so because I have filed a legal law suit againist them for breach of my Work Contract.

I am an ex-employee of Royale Hayat Hospital and was terminated after one year of a two year contact. The reason being “cost cutting” – can be replaced with “two for the price of one”.

I just want the public to know that what the Royale Hayat Hospital did to me for disgraceful, treating me worse than an animal. I intend to be compensation for the wrongful behavior incurred.

======================

Thank you Therese for sharing the details of your experience with us. I am sorry you had to go through such a horrible experience and I hope you will be compensated for all that you had to endure.

37. now U c me now u don't - June 11, 2008

So there was a mixed gender party in Kuwait – big deal ! The root of the problem lies with a NA staged as it is, on a hill of provincialism and xenophobia which has a bone to pick with mixed race parties, not so much the mixed gender parties which have been happening in Kuwait since the 50s and 60s.

But talk of a mixed race read mixed nationality party and there is a furor.

=======================

There are many mixed race and mixed nationality parties in Kuwait going on all the time.

This case was highlighted when photos were leaked because of certain political conditions in the country at the moment and has nothing to do with xenophobia or otherwise. Don’t read more into it than necessary

38. the insider - June 13, 2008

The RHH is one of the worst health care provider in the Middle East. The owners and the management of this hospital have no idea of organizing an hospital and what means “good medicine”. Near all staffs in administration are working for the first time in an hospital and have no professional approach to the specific place of an hospital.

A lot of complications happens and happened in the hospital. One third of the newborns of a female obstetrician are treated by the NICU (newborn intensive care Unit) after delivery, because of her malpractice. This doctor is well considered by the owners of the hospital, because she brings money two time to the hospital, first time for the delivery and second time by the treatment of the newborn on the NICU.

Some parents will recognize in some months, that her child will not develop normally and have a brain damage by the delivery.

This hospital should be examined by the Ministry of Health and in the most countries, an hospital with this bad quality will be closed.

Staffs, who criticize and try to correct the quality are considered by the management as troublemakers and will be terminated in a short time.(what happened also to the 6 westerners, but too many more, or they will be intimidated and are forced to resign)

Let the employees make a last dance and party, before the hospital will be closed or taken over by a new health care institution.

==============================

Well, it certainly looks like someone has opened a can of worms.

What I see from some comments is that there is alot of malpractice going on at the hospital. That’s terrible. Where there is smoke, there is fire.

“What I see from some comments is that there is alot of malpractice going on at the hospital. That’s terrible. Where there is smoke, there is fire.”

Or….disgruntled employees taking their steam out on what is otherwise an excellent health care institution. I don’t want to sound too judgemental but one should try and remain objectively neutral here.

My wife has delivered twins recently at the Royale Hayat hospital. Through out the 9 months we got exceptional hand holding from the Doctor and the hospital nursing staff. As a ‘first time’ father I was terribly anxious but my wife really had a good, comfortable time and I was really impressed by the high standards of care, personalized service.

Incidentally, I ought to know for I am a practicing cardiologist and can judge the quality of health care being provided. The healthy development of our twins is proof enough.

40. Doc'on the move - June 26, 2008

Well, well what a way to start you day…
A friend of mine called to say check out this site. I was impressed to find so many people that i know and work with hanging out here.

Firstly im an ex-employer of RHH and indeed what these folks are saying ARE true in every aspect. RHH sinced it opened there doors in Nov 2006 has been malpracticing expecially in the labour rooms.

The things that are happening there is way beyond believe and most staff just turns a blind eye looking the other way.

Management are corrupted by wealth and prejudiceness. Western staff were treated like kings and queens prior to commissioning but became an expensive liability when the hospital were not doing so GOOD….. Next terminate them all and replace them with cheap labour… I was part of that.

Q8- HEART just count your blessings because you were indeed lucky that your babies even survived! Beside the damage they cause during deliveries they into knocking women out by injecting them intrvenuosly with Domicun so they have no recall of the delivery when giving birth should be a memorable experience.

ROYALE HAYAT —- MEANING ROYALE BIRTH—-what a BIG JOKE.
I think the time has come for the world to know the truth about RRH!

==============================

Thank you for your comment.

I am reiterating what I stated before: if there are indeed malpractice issues, those should be gathered in hard proof and statistics and presented as a case against the institution.

Slandering the hospital I believe is not the proper channel to change. If a good number of RHH employees gather substantial evidence, then you may have a viable case, if not through legal channels then through the media but again it has to be a logical presentation with proof otherwise you stand no chance, especially as you may simply come across as disgruntled ex-employees.

41. DunroaminginQ8 - June 29, 2008

Dear Q8 – I am glad to hear your twins were healthly and note your comments about your wife who ” …..got exceptional hand holding from the Doctor ….”

It could be that this ‘hand-holding doctor’ that your wife had caring for her was one of the six that was terminated and is no longer there to treat patients how they are supposed to be treated and especially for the prices the patients pay!

================

I would be interested to know where this case and the whole RHH affair goes.

42. justchattinwithlarry - July 1, 2008

It will go no where are RHH are just so ignorant to the needs of patients and health care professionals they hire, they simply dont care, the fact that MOH in Kuwait has not investigated them is amazing and scarey i feel so sorry for mothers who hope for normal babies but deliver a baby who is brain damaged during the birth process.
When a patient complains about anything in the hospital they are treated with indignance, even the Al Sabahs …. no wonder they built their own hospital!!!

43. DumroaminginQ8 - July 6, 2008

I agree with Justchattinwithlarry – the owners and their sidekicks don’t care about their patients or staff. They only have interest in how much money they can save by replacing the experienced and more expensive staff with cheaper and less experienced; and how much they can make off the patients’! OK, I hear everyone say: “of course, anyone in their own business are always going to look at ways of saving and making money”! but the majority of business men(women) are NOT playing with people’s lives! You may cut corners when selling car parts, furniture, whatever, but you should NEVER cut corners when people are involved ……….. and this is what RHH are doing! I know – I have been one of the insiders!!!!!!!! Come on MHO – get looking into their records – you will see a lot of cover ups!

48. wellwisher - January 16, 2009

Can a hospital run without a CEO or COO? Here in Kuwait everything is possible. Even Ministry of health has not bothered about it.Today Royale Hayat hospital is managed by managers who have never been in any healthcare industry before this tenure.There are department heads and they don’t report to anyone. Everyone has started making money whereever it is possible.
