AMANI: More famous in Egypt than in her own country Kuwait

Amani Saud Al-Hajji is the first recognized female Kuwaiti opera singer. She teaches at the Higher Institute for Music Arts where she also earned her degree.

I saw an interview with her today on the Al-Watan TV (Banat w Bass program) and she also performed a couple of arias which were quite impressive. I had not realized that there was an interest in operatic performances here in Kuwait.

I came across an interview with her in Circle Mag where she lamented the lack of local media attention to her talent (and other Kuwaiti opera singers). She has given several performances (1999 charity performance for the benefit of cancer patients and for the changeover of MTC logo to ZAIN recently) but she and her colleagues perform annually with the Egyptian Opera. Otherwise, there seems to be no local appreciation or recognition of opera in Kuwait.

I know that many people would love the chance to attend musical performances in Kuwait and I wish Amani and her fellow opera singers at the Institute the best of luck in the future.

I want to “attend”more than musical performances of her.

Do you enjoy opera, Purgatory? :)

I wish there was more endorsement for the arts in Kuwait and respect should be given to those who practice it.. its is very rare to find people of this quality or any support for them…

Kuwait is not in the best of state these days..

=====================

Endorsements must come from the private sector, I’m afraid (and why not? I think that’s a great idea to have art patrons).

Gone are the days when art and artists were adopted and promoted by the government sector.

I attended a performance of hers in Dar Al Athar Al Isllamiyah couple of months ago. She was great.

I think they have performances but they’re not well publicized .
====================

I’m sorry to have missed it then.

Most performances and events are not widely promoted. I think that may be because of limited seating in the theatres in which performances take place.

I would really love to see them perform!! Don’t they have a website?

===================
This is the only web site that I found The Higher Institute of Music Arts

There are no performances listings however there is a page with phone numbers on it so one could call and inquire.

I do believe in the past there have been some performances during the Grain Cultural Festivals announced in the newspapers.

I got to see Amani perform a while back and was so impressed. As a huge and long time opera fan (Anna Netrebko and Lorraine Hunt Liebersen are my opera heroines) I was so impressed that we had a trained and dedicated Kuwaiti soprano amongst us. Amazing.

More power to her too.

I think you are on a “power to Kuwaiti women” roll Jewaira. And I like it, I like it a lot :)

I am MsBaker :)
For non-Kuwaitis it may seem like I am making a big deal but interest and support for the arts is very low key in Kuwait. Most efforts are conducted on an individual basis or for limited audiences.

Jewaira, Kuwaiti women are beautiful. :)

Why don’t you start a private committee for the arts; it could promote the arts, including opera? :)

An excellent proposal Phantom Man :)
