The travel channel just did a show on this place. Really interesting. I’m not sure though that I could go and see it with a crowd? I’d turn into a blushing giggling 12 yo!

=====================

I did secretly want to visit this place when I was in India….

I remember taking my parents around the ruins of Pompeii a few years ago. I had been there before, knew the layout of the city and was able to translate the surviving Latin graffitti reasonably well. Some of the surviving houses, notably the Casa dei Vettii, contained a wide variety of erotic statuary, frescoes and mosaics. Some of the finds and decorations of Pompeian houses are described in detail here:

My mother started to blush, then giggle, and, when she saw a group of broadly smiling nuns emerging from a room which she knew contained a number of erotic statues, she finally burst out laughing.

She was in her early sixties then, and will be 70 this year, but she is far more candid, open and honest about these things now than she was when I was a child. Which, I think, is a much more mature attitude.

People are surprisingly similar across time and culture, it’s just that some cultures are more embarrassed about human nature than others. The Gupta period of India was a cultural golden age for the subcontinent, in which sex and sexuality was an open topic of discussion for both men and women, and was part of the moral framework of society. Openness does not imply licence.

Thank you Stephen for sharing that with us. I do think a mature, common sense attitude makes one feel more comfortable (with room for a little fun as well)

It’s interesting to me that ancient Indians celebrated eroticism in their temples, and today’s Indians are very withdrawn, repressed, conservative in expressing affection, let alone eroticism. Religious expression seems to have changed greatly over the centuries.

It was certainly from a different time. However, I do believe that Indians are very erotic and sensual in spirit and one can even see that in Bollywood filims. I would recommend you look at some clips on YouTube if you don’t have access to Indian films where you are :)

This site was for a long time actually closed to the public. It took an Arab to convince the Indian government to open it up for tourism.

The late famous Syrian poet and ambassador to India, Omar Abu Reesheh, persuaded Nehru to open this site to visitors.

They tell me they are bringing out an Arabic edition of the Kama Sutra, and soon.
On India, well; it is full of mystic eroticism. If you liked Khajuraho I am sure you will also like taking in the cave paintings of Ajanta & Ellora or the Konark Sun temple before being taken in by the paintings of Anjolie Ela Menon.
It’s a pity there are far few travelers from Kuwait to India these days . Jewaira, I know you will like visiting SoBo ( South Bombay ) alot where all the fun and action is at :).
There is some truth in what Phantom Man asserts; however, today we are seeing a Renaissance of Sexuality and Erotica taking place in SoBo and other metros with the Generation.Next, which can only be a good thing. But of one thing I am quite certain, we need more blogs such as yours, promoting Erotica by Suggestion.
