I remember taking my parents around the ruins of Pompeii a few years ago. I had been there before, knew the layout of the city and was able to translate the surviving Latin graffitti reasonably well. Some of the surviving houses, notably the Casa dei Vettii, contained a wide variety of erotic statuary, frescoes and mosaics. It’s interesting to me that ancient Indians celebrated eroticism in their temples, and today’s Indians are very withdrawn, repressed, conservative in expressing affection, let alone eroticism. Religious expression seems to have changed greatly over the centuries.
