Husband Abuse (2) April 30, 2007

I was quite shocked to read the following KUNA news report
مركز تنمية مجتمع القرين ينظم ملتقى (قدوتي) وجلسة حوارية حول ضرب الازواج
I can’t find the English version of this report but the brief translation is :
A two day seminar entitled My Role Model was held at Al-Grain Community Development Centre. The topic of the second day seminar was about wives beating their husbands or husband abuse.
During the second seminar, the lawyer Khaled Abdul-Jaleel discussed the results of a study on a large sector of Kuwaiti women (no exact figure) which showed the following:
35% of Kuwaiti women admitted to enjoying beating their husbands and making them suffer!!
شعرن بالمتعة بعد ضربهن وتعذيبهن لازواجهن
Husbands are physically abused by their wives in 1 out of every 5 marriages in Kuwait!
Isn’t that a high percentage? I would like to get my hands on that study and check it out.

“And all I do is miss you and the way we used to be,
All I do is keep the beat and the bad company.

in the Twilight April 26, 2007
Posted by jewaira in Fiction, Life, Women.9 comments
in the Twilight, she walks down the beach,
her black leather shoes sink into the soft damp sand. A Waif like figure. Tiny girl. At 21, she looks 13.
Her eyes, encircled with deep, dark rings, made even deeper, even darker, by the fading light. She walks on and crouches at the shore. Far away from them. They call her. Come back, come back. She despises their fear.
Defiance, my girl, leads to self-destruction.
“That is what they tell you..…” The wind whispers into her ears, through the beige coloured hijab.
She is startled to feel the presence and gingerly jumps to her feet. The sea breeze materializes into the tall willowy woman, who murmurs into the girl’s heart, “Let go! Within, find it in the depths.”
The sound of the surf, like a magnet, draws her in.
She walks towards the sea again, the salty water lapping the bottoms of her blue jeans.
Shouts, whistles, from the shore. “Come back here, right now!” They order her.
But the tall willowy woman covers the girl’s ears with the incessant sound of the surf and pulls her heart towards the distant horizon.

Does Size Matter? April 24, 2007
Posted by jewaira in Dear Jewaira, Sexuality, Women.31 comments
Dear Jewaira
I have small breasts. They are so small that even size A is a bit loose on me. I used to get nasty comments in public until I started wearing padded bras.
Does breast size matter much to men? Will I be accepted and regarded sexy?
Please ease my worry!
Sincerely,
Worried Woman
=================================
Dear Readers,
As I mentioned in my previous post, the whole buzz is about breasts now. It would be nice to hear honest opinions on this question even though the person is asking us to “ease her worry”.

Perfect Breasts April 24, 2007

It’s not the first time we tackle the subject of boobs on the Boudoir but I have several posts that have been ready for a while and then I got a special link from a special reader and I thought it was the time to post it all.
Boobs provoke many different kinds of feelings in both men and women. But for women, they take on a deeper meaning especially with regards to self-esteem. In this day of plastic enhancements and physical “perfections” being thrust into our faces on a daily basis from the media and otherwise, real boobs just don’t match up.
My special link today is the Perfect Breasts Slideshow and the special JANE Breast Health blog.
Rapex April 22, 2007

Rapex, the anti-rape condom, has come out of South Africa, a country that has the “highest per capita rate of rape of any country in the world, at a reported 119 per 100,000 people“.
The FAQ’s on the Rapex site are interesting.
Should this kind of condom be available to women in Kuwait especially with the increase in rapes of all kinds in recent years?

Honey Bee Mystery April 18, 2007
Posted by jewaira in Animals, Life, Links, News.12 comments
There have been many theories put forth on why the bee populations are dying off under mysterious circumstances. This massive disappearance is called Colony Collapse Disorder:
“Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) occurs when a hive’s inhabitants suddenly disappear, leaving only queens, eggs and a few immature workers….. The vanished bees are never found, but thought to die singly far from home. The parasites, wildlife and other bees that normally raid the honey and pollen left behind when a colony dies, refuse to go anywhere near the abandoned hives. ” FROM : Are Mobile Phones Wiping Out Our Bees?
Where is this a problem?
In the United States: “The West Coast is thought to have lost 60 per cent of its commercial bee population, with 70 per cent missing on the East Coast. CCD has since spread to Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece. And last week John Chapple, one of London’s biggest bee-keepers, announced that 23 of his 40 hives have been abruptly abandoned.”
Alarming isn’t it?
So what does this mean?
“Many people don’t realize the vital role bees play in maintaining a balanced eco-system. According to experts, if bees were to become extinct then humanity would perish after just four years.
‘If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe then man would only have four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man,’said Albert Einstein. ” FROM: Ecological Apocalypse: Why are All the Bees Dying?
Why is this happening?
No one knows why exactly. The latest theory seems to link it to cell phones although genetically modified crops, chem trails, pollution and mites have all been investigated as a cause.
What should you do?
Keep informed about the subject and find out what can be done at a grassroots level. Just don’t go hoarding honey, Winnie the Pooh!
Flying Off the Handle April 17, 2007

FROM: Kuwait TImes, Tuesday April 17th, 2007; p.2.
Flying Ashtray
“A physically handicapped Kuwaiti woman wanting to enter the service centre of the Ministry of Electricity and Water asked an Egyptian security man to open the door for her, but the arrogant man retorted that it was not his duty to open the door. A[sic] enraged Kuwaiti employee witnessing the scene flung an ashtray at him out of disgust, but the man ducked and the ashtray landed on another Kuwaiti employee who was severely wounded. Zahra area police arrived immediately and admitted the injured man to a hospital. The case is under investigation despite the fact that the injured man decided not to file a case against the compatriot as the ashtray accidentally landed on him.”
My goodness! Now if men suffered from PMS, I would say his hormones were running amok. Still, behaviour like that is inexcusable.
Instead, the man should have set an example to the arrogant man and dashed to open the door himself for the handicapped woman. And then filed a report about the security man’s behaviour.
And I don’t know about the building in Al-Zahraa but I would think it was a new building. Shouldn’t all modern buildings accommodate handicapped persons by now in this country?
How Do You Sleep? April 17, 2007

- A Kuwaiti patient and his wife were sent to England for fertility treatments…accompanied by their children...costing the country almost 126 thousand pounds! Perhaps they were not his own?
- A 19 month old Kuwaiti child was sent to England for treatment for colic…costing Kuwait over 438 thousand pounds which were spent on a treatment period of 217 days including the expenses of companions! That was one long stomach ache!
- A 42 year old Kuwaiti female patient was sent for fertility treatment in England despite the fact that she has 5 children!
- A “patient” and his wife and their companions spent 104 days in London spending 27,255 pounds at the expense of the Kuwait Health Office in London.
- The Kuwait Health Office in London spent over 10 million pounds on patients and their companions for a period from February to May 2006 without adhering to the strict auditing regulations. In many cases it was not the patient nor the companions that had received these payments but someone else entirely.

How do these people sleep at night?
Just because some people do that doesn’t make it alright.
Don’t they fear the wrath of God?
Don’t they contemplate the Karmic consequences of their lies and corruption?
Going for fertility treatment while you have children of your own???? Everything you do comes back to you, whether in this life or the after life or in the lives of your children.
How can you sleep soundly at night being a participant in corruption? Shame on you.
Owl Looks At Me April 17, 2007
Posted by jewaira in Death, Life, Poetry.2 comments
Owl looks at me
From the wooden shelf
Stuffing intact
But fur slightly faded and a little
Brittle to the touch.
Owl, with deep dark eyes and
Golden orbs;
You peered from
His bedroom shelf
A decade ago.
Owl, you remain
With us
While he passed on
So suddenly.
Owl is he there
Now?
Within you?
Can I push your stuffed-toyness
To my face
And smell traces
Of years ago?
Peace, Beloved.
Nirvanic Content April 16, 2007

Here is where I’d like to be
Not with you,
Nor him,
Nor he!
But laid out flat on the masseuse’s bed
As she works her hands from toes to head!
Releasing me into Nirvanic content and
Dissipating negative energies spent
On useless daily tasks
It seems…..
While others follow their
Dreams,
I will allow myself to wallow in decadence,
Now and then
Surely it makes sense?
I will stop here and let you contemplate
My erratic philosophy,
Social duties can surely wait
While I surrender to meditative serenity.
So Bawdy April 15, 2007
Posted by jewaira in Kuwait, Life, Opinion.25 comments
Now and then I listen to the Diwaniyyah show on Marina Fm 88.8.
It has become a popular show for audience participation and listeners often call in or sms their opinions. On some days there are some really outrageous questions and some really funny participants. I can’t help but laugh out loud at the extreme humour.
The guys who run the show are jokey and really get the conversation going but sometimes they are really on the edge of “propriety”. Because of their personalities, they get some “strange” callers.
Last week, a woman called in and she sounded very sultry, her husky voice would suddenly burst out into throaty laughs. She really did sound .. well the only word I kept thinking of was “bawdy” as she talked. He asked her where she was calling from..because of the echo and she said she was in the Art room at school. She was an art teacher.
This shocked me – somewhat. A teacher calling into a radio program during work hours and flirting… as the rest of Kuwait listened in? I know, I know. People will say that teachers are human beings too..but she didn’t sound like someone I would want my child around at school. I am more used to the strict, mean, teachers of old.
During the Diwaniyya program sometime last week, a young woman called up and after the usual introductions she ordered the DJ to put on some music in the background. He did a double take and said “What?” She repeated herself, in a commanding manner, and said turn on some music because I am going to say something really challenging (chayed) and please women don’t be offended. She also sounded like she wasn’t all together. I was very amused that she was taken immediately off the air and the guys continued with the show as though nothing had happened.
Today the question was what if women had to pay the dowry, what would you ask for (men of course). I was amused when one woman called up and said that she wanted to marry an American because Kuwaiti men had such a bad opinion of Kuwaiti women. If she had to pay dowry, she would rather pay for an American husband.
Of course I am only mentioning women callers here…it would take a full post to discuss the men who call in!
