Arab Booty September 24, 2006

trackback

I found these links at Leilouta’s and frankly I was quite disturbed as I have never seen anything like it.

Going through the links and the comments of the person (Ambro23) posting on YouTube, I just wonder what this Arab Booty Dancing is and is it so prevalent? There are hundreds of posted clips.
And what about those “Emancipated Arab Girls”? Are they aware that they are on the net? Or are these stolen bluetooth files?

I was reluctant to post about this for obvious reasons but I need information if it is available.

This is such a shame.

In Leilouta’s comment section, someone said it’s in the UAE.

I don’t know how to react to this.

2. Post-it - September 24, 2006

Ana gayla min zeman, mako 3ala il arab pervertedness :P
Hmmm, could be some kind of booty call.

Or is that arab hip hop krumping?

5. a3sab - September 25, 2006

its fascinating in a disgusting kinda of way.
did you notice that in one of the videos the lyrics being played in the background was “wil 9alawat 9alaw 3ala mohammed”!
7imdillah wishikir

6. Marzouq - September 25, 2006

I have no clue where this is made.. the only way to figure it out is from the music.. that was very disturbing in an odd kind of way.. I just didnt know where to place it.. Really had no clue where this all fits..

I think they dont care they are on the net since one of them is looking directly at a video camera.. its not a phone camera..

7. jewaira - September 25, 2006

Thanks Post-It :) for the clarification.
Here are some links where this dance is discussed on forums in the UAE:
معلاية
المعلاية (History of..)
Fascinating!

Will translate once I learn enough about this.

I would like to hear more from people if there is more information and sources so we can understand more about this.

Post-It
The Emancipated Arab Girl clips are different than the معلاية clips. They show girls in homes or other places dancing away.

8. jewaira - September 25, 2006

From Arab Times (Not the Kuwaiti one)

9. A pedestrian - September 25, 2006

I don’t get it , where these women or men? or both ?

10. Intlxpatr - September 25, 2006

Oh my! Holy Smokes! Did you see the GUYS on the ceiling fans. (Dying laughing.)

C’mon, marriage rituals today are a far cry from those of our ancestors. Marriage is about as primal as you can get; in our culture the bride and groom were taken to bed and people waited outside the door for the consummation. (Kings and new brides were known to have to consummate with witnesses!) At least these “dancers” are clothed!

11. erzulie - September 25, 2006

Jewaira, I love your banners :)
Sometimes people change their layout and it’s a bit hard to adjust but yours are very subtle. And they’re always beautiful.
I had to say that :)

12. jewaira - September 25, 2006

Pedestrian
They look like women. Indeed, in some of the gatherings, there are children attending so it seems like whole families are involved.
Some people think the dancers are transvestites or transsexuals. I am still reading up on this and would welcome any more links or information.
In some places, I hear Kuwait linked to this type of dance although in the videos I saw, most of the men were in Emarati or Omani traditional dress.
Intlxpatr
Haha yes the guys on the ceiling fans are a riot although I doubt that is any dance but crazy antics!
My reaction to the video clips of the booty dancing is so strong because I still do not believe that these kinds of gatherings occur in our conservative culture. I am still reading up on it but some of what I have read intimates that these Ma’laya dance groups are use in some Emarati weddings (UAE).
However, the irony of it is that the dancers are clothed !
It is hard for someone outside the Arab Muslim culture to understand how shocking this is although I am sure that many people do engage in such gatherings.
The Internet has opened up all the deep, dark corners of society that were closed to us before. Now we can get a glimpse into what some men get up to!
Erzulie
Thanks for your kind words. So nice of you. And you know what? I noticed that your profile icon is Aphrodite by the same artist!

13. Dream.Pod - September 25, 2006

I’ve seen such videos before, a lot of young guys in kuwait have it on their mobiles. One of them told me this takes place in UAE in isolated areas. I get the feeling its not really condoned legally.

I’ve also heard form someone that some of these events take place at ras’Alkhaymah. How true this is I dont know.

But Im not shocked, have you ever been to raves? The same thing occurs just with a lot more drugs, and sex.

At least they havent reached the drug part of it yet.

Can you imagine those booty dancers on ecstasy?

14. jewaira - September 25, 2006

Dream.Pod
According to what I have read now (in UAE forums) , these dance groups are actually hired for entertainment in some weddings in the UAE.

In addition, they are most probably for the benefit of private male gatherings who enjoy that kind of thing.

But they are not socially acceptable in most cases. Over and over you read that these are foreign influences on the Arab Muslim communities.

15. Dream.Pod - September 25, 2006

Oh I totally agree with you, this definately not acceptable by any arab culture that I know of. Im sure even the most liberal arabs would disaprove of such functions. (Of course some would love to be there at a such a function, but the day they have kids, Im sure the point of view will change drastically)

16. purgatory72 - September 25, 2006

for someone as old as you are, you sure do not know much about the world, and seems many otherts do not :)

It is well known form of entertainment, usually in the UAE with mostly gay men present.

As for the hanging monkies, that is something else, would have been fun if their head was chopped while spinning.

17. jewaira - September 25, 2006

Purgatory!!
OOoh! Do you blame me for making you a vampire!! Should have made you a mean one though! :P

No, even if I were as old as the mountains, I would not have known about such forms of entertainment without the Internet.

Nonetheless, I appreciate your input on the subject!

18. cixousianpanic - September 25, 2006

I actually think that there is nothing wrong with this type of dancing. They’re just shaking their booty… and they have every right too cause they’re doing it oh-so-well :D

Imagine that instead of Arabic music, it was Sean Paul, and that the girls dancing where dressed in Daisy Duke shorts and mid-riff revealing tops - this type of dancing would be the next craze!!

Regardless of what is being said here and there about where these dances are being held and who is organizing them, Arab women and men are soooo sexually frustrated its not funny … so if they can shake it, let them shake it :D *thats my take on it anyway*

19. purgatory72 - September 26, 2006

Am not mean, just direct sometimes.

20. Fuzzy - September 26, 2006

whats with the دقني دقني theme LOL

mubarak 3alaikom alshahar !

21. Intlxpatr - September 26, 2006

I remember reading a book a while back by a Finnish anthropologist who lived in a small Omani village. Had some original title like “Behind the Veil” (LOL!) She described an Omani custom (?) which she called “the third sex” where men temporarily lived a few years as women, would be included in marriage ceremonies participating with the women, and were a kind of entertainer. She also said that in later years, these same men could retire from their trans-sexual career, marry, have families . . .

22. jewaira - September 26, 2006

Purgatory
I know you’re not mean, you big pussycat! :)
But I feel strongly about getting facts straight. Not only was I not aware of this ma’laya form of entertainment, but also the comments on the YOUTUBE postings were very severe and people were playing a guessing game as to the nationalities of those involved.
I feel that we should understand what we are seeing; that the person who is posting these clips is doing a disservice to other Arabs by projecting these images without proper explanation.
If you read some of the comments on the YouTube postings you will understand what I mean.
cixousianpanic
I agree that people should enjoy themselves and that these dancers are quite..er…flexible.
However, it just looks very strange to me: they are dancing in a very erotic manner; fully clothed; with a headscarf on even; in front of dozens of men who are obviously photographing them and getting off on two “females” riding each other: does this have anything to do with riding a camel?
So is this a local version of adult entertainment? Why are children involved? - some clips clearly have children attending the gatherings and watching.
As for Arabs being sexually frustrated, I have to disagree ;) I think the heat makes us all very hot with a higher level of sex drive than others.
Who knows what happens behind those high walls and those closed doors? :)
Fuzzy
3alaina o 3alaik.
I will only smile in response to your question :)
Intlxpatr
Now that is quite fascinating!
Thanks for sharing the info. The book is :Behind the Veil in Arabia: Women in Oman

I am blown away - that is the exact book!

26. qd06 - October 3, 2006

I agree many in Arab and South Asian cultures try to hide behind fake modesty. This modesty however should end behind closed doors with you Zawj or Zawja.

It has been given to us as a comfort. People who don’t avail it tend to do other perverse things. The stuff in the videos is like going to a Strip Club in the West. It is a waste of time and money. Why do that in a room full of guys if you can do the same with your mate. Humans are humans no matter where they are from or their culture. I have seen to many desperate housewives and husbands since I moved to the Middle East. It is not a funny situation because so many problems can come from this….

27. jewaira - October 10, 2006

Further reading and links from forums on the ma’alayah form of dancing; this on from UAE blog:

Let people have fun man. Damn! they are not hurting anyone, anyways its the best erotic dance i have seen.

29. Damian - October 18, 2006

I notice that the booty dancing videos have been removed now.

But the shot of two men hanging off the ceiling fans remains. It’s so blurry that at first I though they were dervishes, then the camera pulled back and I realised what they were doing.

You’ve got to admit, they look hillarious.

30. jewaira - October 18, 2006

Yes, I see that the person’s account on YouTube has been suspended. Oh well, it was certainly interesting while it lasted!! :P

I wonder what will happen with the originality of YouTube now that it has been bought by Google.

35. In Digni Style « Jewaira’s Boudoir - December 22, 2006

[...] It was the first time I had heard this kind of song in a Kuwaiti wedding and once I heard the words…”digni digni“….I was shocked to realize that it was the same sort of song that I had heard on the Arab Booty post, the ones called Ma3laya. I couldn’t believe my eyes as the two girls gyrated in an extremely sexy manner, to a song that I could only associate with what I had seen on the Internet. Their dancing was not as vulgar and they did not do sexual movements with each other, but it seemed too sexy a dance for the kind of setting we were in. [...]

36. PseudoRandom - December 22, 2006

Most of the videos are kinda freaky!

Amusing but in a non-funny, freaky way!

Still had a good laugh tho hahahaahahahaha.

37. jewaira - December 22, 2006

PseudoRandom
The first videos we saw were of actual gatherings where veiled women danced in front of men and there were children there watching this erotic dancing. Not all videos are of the same though.

38. kl - February 20, 2007

Hi Jewaira,

I just found the video on Youtube, really astonished.

Try to understand the background information and googled it on internet and be linked to your blog.

Seems you have discussed for months,

I dont know whether I have missed some info since there are some in arabic.

Have you digged out the nationality of the dancers?

Here is a copy from comments on Youtube:

/****************************/

its called mi3laya (mi’laya)

I just need to clarify one thing

This is a form of dancing mainly performed in the UAE. It’s called um-alaya. it is also referred to as the dance of a camel in which a woman moves her lower back to the music. However, this dance does not reflect in Islamic values,
but it is merely a form on entertainment for those who seek it.

(Reply)
justqrs (1 week ago)
these are Baluchi girls who are poor and this form of dancing in these bands is their source for income. they are ‘Arabized’ due to decades and centuries of living in Arabia, they come from Baluchistan which is a region in both Pakistan and Iran. Arab local girls don’t need to have such ‘jobs’, they are rich enough not to even think of it.

(Reply)
TruthDaTruth (1 day ago)
You are mistaken,, they are Meenawis,, you know Minawees, use to eb fishers who flew iran,, part of balochistans, who are not accepted as balosh niether as iranis, they are caled Ustha in iran. They are not baloch but to make their name to look better they call them self baloch,, baloch ppl are from good culture,, these people are poor,, minawis, they dance for money in marriages etc. I from UAE, lived with balochs,, i even udnerstood few song words which was minawi.dont call minawis baluch

Im from UAE, these are dancers,, most of them are lebanese, Bengali, Egyptian or even morrocans etc, they use them to dance in marriages,, how stupid you guys can be,, have u ever been in UAE? you think uae girl can be so low,, these girls are paid to dance. you think UAE girls need money? Come to UAE and have alook.. find me one UAE girl like this ill pay you million
/****************************/

Are they baloch or really have multi-source means can be lebanese, bengali, etc…?

I am a little suspicous of the latter, normally such kind of traditional culture does not likely be shared between different ppl thousands of miles away.

Thanks.

Love it or hate it. Praise it or condem it.

I’m no folk expert, but I think it’s safe to say that it’s a sexually charged form of Art. I believe “dagni,”* the laying on the ground and the movement are celebration of the booty as a symbol of sexual attraction.

I, yet, hold a strong believe that this form of art should be rated R.

*Dagni in Kuwaiti and some other Arabia cultures is a slang for “Banged me.” In every possible way.

====================================

Devil Finch
It is offensive because of its very distinct sexual poses and erotic nature and I agree it is certainly R rated.
