Tonight I met a very beautiful woman at one of the houses we were visiting. She was dressed in a very tasteful caftan in summer colours. As she stood to greet me and shake my hand, we both exchanged an intense look doing our best to mask our curiosity of each other.
As she spoke, I admired her lovely black eyes and her shoulder length black hair. Her teeth were not perfectly aligned but she had a most intriguing smile. And when she threw her head back and laughed, it was done with such a seductive air, I thought she might be trying to impress my husband, sitting on the chair directly opposite her in the parlour.
She engaged in light conversation with those around us and twice she turned to me, with eyes slightly crossed in the way the Arabs love to describe as “hawar? and held my gaze as we talked about Ramadan and other matters. She wore only light lipstick and her eyelashes were like thick black brushes. No obtrusive heavy makeup. Only her beauty shining through. As she spoke, I wondered whether or not she was a blogger, because that is certainly the recurrent feeling I was getting as she looked at me quizzically.
As she stood up to leave and adjusted her waistline, the side slits on her caftan revealed that her legs were heavier than the rest of her body. She was so beautiful I could not possibly be jealous, only feeling overwhelming admiration for this woman who spent her mornings watching Ramadan television serials in one go from ten o’clock to two in the afternoon. We stood up, in customary respect, as she left and at the same time I admired the hostess’ coffee table set with delectable plump dried fruits and an assortment of choice nuts.
